Calling Mr. Terry Guo

Finally made a few phone calls to Foxconn's Taipei office to inform Mr. Terry Guo about Guollywood.com After explaining the objective of my call more than a few times. The reception to my phone call was tepidly lukewarm. The gentleman did ask for my phone number and email, but I am not very confident that this "good news" will reach Mr. Guo's ear. Looks like I may have to resort to Plan B.

What is the name of the movie in English?

The movies that come out of Guollywood will at first makes sense in Chinese, but don't expect a direct literal translation of the movie title into English. The guess work involves will stump even the most capable translator. For example the movie 白銀帝國 is not "White Silver Empire", it's The Silver Valley. Why? Don't ask me. Nobody knows. That is just the way it is. This is a highly inefficient system. Why not just have one domain name. Guollywood.com and be done with it. The time and the energy saved will be tremendous.

Hollywood is a tough act to follow

Even with considerable wealth at Mr. Guo's disposal, attempting to measure an emergent movie industry's success against Hollywood is just shear lunacy. How will those 100 movies pan out? Using movie to tell story that is uniquely Chinese is a sound concept to say the least. After all, China is one of the most culturally profound society there is. But the world wide audiences had been spoiled by Hollywood's movie magic. No one is their right minds should under-estimate China's story telling skill. If that is the basic notion, perhaps, Guollywood.com is in for a pretty good future.

From Silver Valley to Silver Screen

The Silver Valley is a movie about ancient banking and finance industry in Shanxi (晉) province China http://www.thesilvervalley.com/eng_menu.htm I haven't seen the movie but, the name Silver Valley implies that there is a astonish accumulation of wealth by the "merchants of Shanxi" 晉商. Shanxi is also the wealthiest province in China during both Ming and Chin Dynasty.

The Value of Guollywood.com

電影是百年大業, Guollywood.com will grow with this new Chinese cinematic era which is about to be made possible by 郭台銘.
郭台銘 wants to make 100 movies in the next few years. Regularly one needs to register 100 domain names for 100 movies, and prospective viewers needs to guess what is the name of the movie. Guollywood.com solves this problem in one giant swoop. All one hundred movies can be managed under Guollywood.com Once the website is launched, the traffic gathering potential will be tremendous.

Guollywood = 郭萊塢

"Guollywood" is an example of neologism, a coining of a new word more or less due to necessity. Will this word catches on? Very likely so, in my humbled personal opinion. Here's why.
We all know how powerful Hollywood is, and there is a Bollywood in India. What about China?
China's movie industry needs a corresponding "__llywood" for symmetry and "fairness" Incidentally, the chairman of Foxconn (Hon Hai) 郭台銘 is getting into the movie industry in a big way. Neologism rarely occurs between two different languages, but in a global village, something like this is bound to happen soon or later. Why not honor 郭台銘 for his effort with this quirky new phrase "郭萊塢"
